![]() Laos has a monsoonal climate. Winters (November to April) are relatively cool and dry, and summers (May to October) are hot and wet. During the summer rainy season the average daily temperature is about 27 deg C (80 deg F), and rainfall is between 1,270 mm (50 in) and 2,286 mm (90 in). Temperatures during the dry season average between 16 deg C (61 deg F) to 21 deg C (70 deg F). The impact of climate change will increase rice production in provinces across Laos in the next 36 years, says an official for the National Agriculture-Forestry Research Institute. The prediction on the impact of climate change will increase rain-fed lowland rice production in Savannakhet province from 2040 to 2049. The change in carbon dioxide emissions will increase the amount of rainfall, solar radiation, minimum and maximum temperatures, which will help rice production in lowland provinces to increase. The prediction would be that in the next 50 years the world would get hotter and the seas would gradually evaporate. Laos and Thailand would face an increase in flooding. We are already seeing the impact of flooding in lowland areas, particularly in many provinces of Thailand, which causes homelessness and other problems for farmers. Climate changes will continue to threaten the livelihoods of thousands of farmers in Laos and across Southeast Asia unless developed countries take action. Even though efforts were being made by some developed countries to reduce the release of fuels and gasses, the world climate would continue to get hotter and would produce further changes to the wet season. Laos is improving its human resource development, knowledge, understanding and information to support the study of climate change. |
