
![]() Any tourists or guests that visit Laos who do not know or touch the Lamvong Dance will not yet know about Lao tradition and culture and they would keep in mind that they miss this fancy dance style. Lamvong dance stands out as a symbol of Lao tradition and social lives performed together by the young and old for collective entertainment. The dance is commonly performed together by organized at the ceremonies such as: engagement and wedding parties, Lao new year, merits making, warm of the house, the village, the pagoda to make merry. It is also organized to harmonize the official ceremonies such as: reception and farewell parties for the high ranking delegation and business people so as to get more acquainted among the hosts and guests in a relaxing and comfortable way. Lamvong Dance reflects gentle and graceful gestures physically and mentally through different rhythms such as: the simple Lamvong, Salavan, Siphandone, Khonesavane, Tangvai, Phouthai, Luang Phrabang and others. Lamvong songs can be accompanied by both modern and local musical instruments. So far, there is no evidence to certify or prove the time when the dance was first introduced to Lao society. However it was known widely in Lao society since the 1940's. Previously. Lamvong dance was performed only in the yard of the pagoda because Lao people respect Buddhism. The pagoda yard is the worshipping place so believe that it is sinful to dance in the sacred place. Later, Lamvong was allowed into the Pagoda only for fund-raising purposes: for the construction of the pagoda, monks houses, schools and hospitals. Due to these reasons, Lamvong can be organized in the Pagoda yards in the Buddhist festivals. Female dancing partners are usually selected among pretty and charming girls in the village. Lamvong is thus considered as the Lao national heritage for fun and to welcome the guests. |
