National Flag Of Laos

The National Flag of the Lao People's Democratic Republic is a dark blue background with red borders and a white moon. This new flag became effective in 1975 after the 600-year-old monarchy was overthrown by the current Communist State.

White symbolizes the moon over the river Mekong River as well as justice, unity and the promise of the future. Blue stands for prosperity. Red represents the blood that was shed during the struggle for freedom.

The width of the flag is two thirds of its length. The area of the red borders on each side is one half of the dark blue area. The area of the white moon is equal to four fifths of the dark blue area.
