![]() A look inside city minds finds there's room for improvement Ms Kethsana Keomany, 30, a resident of Saphangthong village, said: "Nowadays, the cost of living is very expensive, students use their own money to buy petrol for their vehicles. In the future, it will cost them more because the petrol prices are increasing. When they go to school they have to pay for parking tickets every time they park motorbikes in schools. I want the Government to help students save money by introducing a bus service that passes every college and school. The students will ride the bus instead of using their own vehicles. And bus services should run until 9pm, because many students choose to study in the evening. I think that it is one way to improve life for students and it will help them save money. The traffic jams will be decreased if students have a bus service." Ms Chithpasong Somsavanh, a resident in Vientiane, said: "I notice Laos doesn't know much about machine production or electronics. Compared to other countries we don't have much experience about science, because when students learn about something in the science laboratory, they don't have the right or up-to-date equipment; in some schools the equipment is old. I think that Laos can produce its own machines." Ms Daovone Inthadaline, 25, a resident of Somvang village, said: "Nowadays people are working hard, and they want somewhere to relax like the park. I would like Vientiane to have more public parks. I always go jogging at Patouxay Park, and there are many people there relaxing, or running for exercise in the morning and evening. There should be more parks with beautiful plants like other countries. I would like the Government to build parks around villages like Chinaimo, Thongpong and Dongdok, and other places for people who live outside town. We have to drive cars or motorbikes to get to the city parks. If we have a lot of parks, people should all help to maintain them, not only the park cleaners. We need more places for children to play as well; there are swings, swimming pools and many attractions for children. In Vientiane, I see some toys at the royal garden at That Luang. I think they are quite old, there should be new places and new toys, when children go there they will feel that they are living in a dream world." Mr Souksavanh Sysamay, a student of medical science at the National University of Laos, said: "The roads in our country should be improved, every road should be constructed like Lane Xang Avenue. It is large and there are two lanes with a central reservation to divide the road. Vehicles go one way on Lane Xang Avenue, which means they will not run into the opposite lane. I think accidents in our city will be reduced if all the roads were like this. The light reflectors on some of the new roads, which help drivers navigate in the dark, have already been broken on some city roads." Ms Philavanh Kedsatha, 23, a resident of Vientiane, said: "I would like the National Library to open on weekends, because on weekdays students don't have much free time. I would also like the library to increase the number of books they stock. We need more modern and updated books, which give us an idea about the current situation of the world. I think that people will use the library more if it is updated. And people in Vientiane will broaden their knowledge too, if people only see old books in the national library, they will, in all likelihood, only visit once." Ms Noy, a resident in Vientiane said: "I would like to see all people develop their minds, people want new roads, they want big supermarkets, new parks and want many things to be improved or constructed. I see that many things in Laos need improving. But I think that it can't be done in a short space of time, it has to be improved step by step. I see the country improving right now, but I don't see people improving their minds. I have seen that there are bus stops in front of the national stadium that have graffiti on them. Some people when they eat will throw their garbage away immediately. Market traders, especially in the Kuadin market, know there is the canal around there, but people still throw garbage into the water. This makes it dirtier and damages the environment as well. People should be more responsible and help each other to take care of public property, and keep the city clean for the rest of society." |
