An Important Turning Point For Laos

It is often noted that only a few countries in this world have achieved their national liberation without bloodshed. Under the leadership of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, Laos is one country that was able to seize administrative power from the former regime and offer it to the people without violence and achieve the establishment of the Lao People's Democratic Republic on December 2, 1975.

Under the leadership of the Party, Laos softly seized the administration from the old regime by using the power of the masses instead of weapons and military force. There was no fighting during the seizure of administrative power.

August 23, 1975 was an important day, the date of the uprising by the Vientiane people to seize administrative power from the former regime.

This historical event, the day when people rallied at That Luang Square, led to the establishment of the Lao People's Democratic Republic on December 2, 1975.

The city first turned out in force on May 1, 1975, when people from all classes in Vientiane paraded to call for the crushing of the administration and armed forces of the former Vientiane government, and to seek the ousting of the US from Laos.

At that time the people in every district of Vientiane came out to organise meetings to protest against the old regime.

Then on August 23, 1975, more than 20,000 people marched on That Luang square, where once again, they gathered to seek the crushing of the old regime and competently seized power to place it in the hands of the people.

The National Congress on December 1-2, 1975 adopted the abdication of the King and also adopted the resolution of the congress on eradicating the monarchy and establishing the people's democratic regime.

The end of the monarchal regime was a great victory and is part of the history of the revolution, this mirrored the abilities and intelligence of the Party which could lead the Lao people and their nation out from under the oppression of the outside powers who propped up the old regime and could liberate the country in a peaceful way.

After seizing power across the country and establishing the Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Party led the revolution into a new period of national development and protection. The Party also then started to implement the renovation policy.

Throughout the implementation of the renovation policy, all sectors grew and this was apparent in the socio-economic development of Laos.

Since then, the living conditions of the Lao people have improved. In the 2003-2004 fiscal year the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at about 6.5 per cent and the national income reached over 3,000 billion kip. Now the Government is focusing on the eradication of the poverty of the people in 74 districts in Laos, especially in remote areas. Many development projects are being actively implemented to help people out of poverty.
