![]() The main food in Laos is rice. Everyone has eaten it since they were born. There are two types of rice, sticky rice (steamed) and white rice (boiled). Most Lao people like to eat sticky rice but they can't really eat rice alone so they always have something to go with it. There are many dishes of food to go with rice, such as meat salad (larp), barbequed chicken, bamboo shoot soup (gaang nor mai) and papaya salad (dum maak hoong), these are just some popular Lao foods. Unlike white rice, sticky rice can also be used to make various Lao desserts. Lao people are used to eating rice with their meal, but Vietnamese rice noodles (fur) is also a favourite food for many Lao people, especially women and young people. Most Lao people can't have sandwiches for their meal, they call sandwiches a snack. Also most Lao people do not sit down to eat a proper meal with the family because they usually grab something to eat whenever they are hungry, especially kids. If you know some Lao person, you might hear them say "gin khaow la boh?" every time you meet them. It means "have you ate yet?" or more precise "have you ate rice yet?". |
